Virtual and augmented reality (VAR) technology is one of the most ground-breaking technologies of this century, and higher education is in the early stages of adopting the innovative technology as a teaching tool. Indeed, AR/VR technologies are creating new means for education by opening doors for students to learn with hands-on experience and teachers to instruct in a more immersive, technological environment.
The New Educational Technology Unit (UNTE), represented by Helena Saade Ph.D, participated in an international training on Virtual Reality in education delivered by Anders Gronstedt, Ph.D, President at “The Gronstedt Group”, in the presence of experts in technology and artificial Intelligence from all over the world to explore ways of integrating VR technology into teaching and curricula in ways that are logical and helpful for students.
Participants exchanged experiences about how technology has the ability to take students to locations that are physically restricted and motivate them to unleash their imagination and inspire bright, innovative minds. By using VR in learning, students will be pushed to think out of the box, adapt to change, and transform the world. However, for educators in higher education, is it critical that they develop appropriate teaching content by learning from hands-on experience and the positive examples of VAR education in their disciplines in medicine, history, architecture, civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering.
UNTE participation in the training is to keep up to date on knowledge, skills, and capacities to implement innovative pedagogical ideas and to equip students and teachers with skills around emerging technologies.
The use of VR in education will dramatically increase over the next few years. While it is unlikely to replace traditional face-to-face teaching methods anytime soon, it will continue to be used to enhance learning and educational experiences.
