USE OF SAFE EXAM BROWSER

Teachers who wish to prevent students from accessing the internet/resources from their workstation; safe exam browser can be used. Therefore, below is the necessary scenario:

  • Students MUST have Safe Exam Browser installed at their computer,
  • Teacher MUST set up a configuration file and send it to students,

As a result, students will only be able to access the quiz via this configuration file. This is important, because student will have access to their own configuration file, so in this case they could manipulate the configuration file in a way that allow them to access the internet/resources even though they launched Safe Exam Browser. Therefore, the teacher must set up the configuration file in a way to force students to use his configuration file in order to access the quiz.

Below is how to set up the configuration file to apply the above scenario:

A. GENERAL:

  1. Start URL: Insert the URL of your quiz. In this case once students open Teacher’s configuration file, it will re-direct them to the quiz page
  2. dministrator/confirm administrator password: teacher must set an administrator password to prevent students from opening and examining the configuration file

B. CONFIGURE FILE:

Use SEB settings file for …: teacher better choose “starting an exam” so that students start the exam with the according settings but won’t change their local SEB settings.

C. USER INTERFACE:

Browser view modeo : teacher should choose “Use full screen mode” in order to display the SEB browser full screen.

D. EXAM:

Browser Exam Key : Teacher must check the “use browser Exam key”.

Important: First, when finishing all the configurations, teacher must save the configuration file and then copy this browser exam key and paste it in the Moodle quiz (field: allowed browser key exam) because the Browser Exam Key changes when you change any setting.

E. APPLICATION:

Permitted Processes : Click on “Choose Application” to insert the necessary application installed.

Important: Students who do not have the chosen applications on their workstation, they will not be able to use them

F. HOOKED KEYS:

Special Keys : Teacher can uncheck the below special keys: CTRL-ESC, ALT-ESC, ALT-TAB, ALT-F4, Right Mouse, Printscreen, Alt-Mousewheel

G. SAVING CONFIGURATION FILE:

Once finished the configuration, teacher must save the file and send it to his students.

  1. Click on File – Save settings As
  2. It is better to name the file as it is on Moodle.USJ especially when there are plenty of quizzes, this way teacher can differentiate which configuration file corresponds to which Quiz on Moodle.USJ

Remark: as mentioned before (D. EXAM), after saving the configuration file, teacher must copy now the Browser Exam Key in
